HTML5 Support
The Sourcecast website uses HTML5 for playing media content and finding your geolocation. We understand that this has caused many problems with people running on older browsers.
Designing a website built for older browsers is both time-consuming and expensive. As Sourcecast is a voluntary project that makes no money from its services, we can only offer limited support for older internet browsers. Anyone using an older ‘HTML5-less’ browser must first download the episode and play it using their own media player (E.g. iTunes/Windows Media Player).
Support summary
Below is a table showing what browsers support what HTML5 APIs, and which version number is required to use said APIs.
Audio
Sourcecast Series 2 is published using our own in-house software. This means that we can release episodes in both MP3 and OGG formats. OGG files are supported by Google Chrome 6 or newer, Firefox 4 or newer, and Opera 10.6 or newer. MP3 files are supported by Google Chrome 6 or newer, Safari 5 or newer, and Internet Explorer 9 or newer. This means that anyone using a modern browser can listen to Series 2 episodes.
However, Series 1 was published using PodOmatic, who only provide an MP3 file. This means that only browsers that support MP3 files (Chrome, Safari and IE) can listen to older episodes in their browser. Other users, like those that do not have a browser that supports HTML5, must download the episode and play it using their own media player.

Geolocation
On our ‘Sourcecast Listeners Worldwide’ page, we allow you to discover your geolocation using our small (but useful) HTML5 geolocation API (thanks to W3Schools for the code).
However, similar to our HTML5 audio, it is only available on certain browsers. Internet Explorer 9 or newer, Firefox 3.5 or newer, Chrome 5 or newer, Safari 5 or newer, and Opera 10.6 or newer all support the HTML5 geolocation API.
If you are not using one of these browsers, then you’re either stuck at work/school, or you’ve been living under a rock for five years. Please click on one of the icons on the right-hand side of the screen to download the latest version of your browser.
